saw i had a flat on the rear yesterday took it out tonight and the tube isn't punctured but it looks like this when inflated, any idea what's caused it?

Just a section of tube where the wall thickness is a bit thinner.

Blowing it up outside the tyre? Seriously though, is it leaking? Must be a manufacturing fault.

It's only got one pump of air in, I just put a pump in before sticking it in the tyre and all the air rushed to one spot! I've used later tubes for well over a year they've never gone totally flat before they usually just loose abit of pressure over a few days.

If your going to patch a tube you need to pump it up outside the tyre to find the hole?

Yes indeed! I have noticed that some latex tubes do appear to have varying thickness, and a tendency to do as the OP's if you put too much air into them outside the tyre. Have also had faulty valves which were fine until the area around the junction between the valve and the tube was stressed by the valve being pushed through the rim, causing mystery loss of air.
