Variable speed limits motorway m5 Bristol

Hi, totally stressed out all night I know I've messed up but I genuinely didn't realise. Yesterday I hired a car to drive from Worcester (I don't own one) to Falmouth motorway was generally quite. As I approached Bristol area I saw gantries with 60 marked above each Lane I thought it was advisory so I drove on at 70mph after a while I noticed I was passing others so paid more attention to the gantry and noticed a speed camera symbol. The penny dropped and so did my jaw! I must have passed under 15 approx of these gantries. Does this mean 15 speeding tickets and a ban? Please don't slate too much I know I should have known and kept up to date with things. Any ideas much appreciated.

You'll be sent to the colonies.....

It's a bit more complicated than that...
On the M25 variable speed limit section most of the gantries don't have cameras, and where they exist they're very rarely switched on.

It'll take a month or two for any paperwork to come through to you as it was a hire car. First they'll write to the hire company requesting details of the driver. They have so many days[ 28 I think] to return the form confirming who was the hirer.... they then send a form out to the hirer requesting details of the driver.

I think about 1 in 3 gantries have a camera. Also, the cameras are active all the time, even when no speed limit is shown on the gantries, so you have to be careful through there all the time. I know the cameras are always active because I've seen the camera flash when there is no limit shown.

.

I've often wondered what happens to someone who triggers a line of cameras.

I will let you know User.

Thanks for the replies could be a long wait. I'm such a dumb ass.

I very much doubt you'll get points for each of them but I would imagine (and hope, sorry) that you get some points and a fine at least. I sympathise with not noticing but without being pompous, not noticing things when driving at speed is not good.

It's good at least that you're putting your hands up and accepting it rather than trying to wriggle out of it like mr red-light-cylist yesterday!

Hope so Adrian. A ban would totally ruin my chances of becoming a foster carer nearly through the assessment a driving licence is essential.

Agree fully, paying more attention is essential. It was stupid.

My daughter got a fine and points for doing 73 through a 50 MPH one. If she had been doing 70 she would probably have got away with a speed awareness course.
The cameras on the anti-clockwise M25 just after J29 work from time to time. When they are on it is like being in a 70's disco with strobe lights. They are moving them off the gantries now and only having one on the side.
Count yourself lucky you didn't pass any showing 40.

I do recall many years ago someone getting one ticket for each camera they passed. But that was a long time ago.

On the M42 they have these. I've seen them go off - they flash. If you didn't get flashed you're probably fine. As others have said, most of the time they are turned off.

For what its worth, the orange signs with just a number are advisory. The signs in a red circle are mandatory.

You should only get one speeding ticket.

"Speeding" isn't instantaneous, they don't do a dy/dx calculation. Well, that's what I'd argue..

They've put LED 50mph speed limit signs all round the A1 Newcastle western bypass in an effort to slow the traffic and reduce the queues... when people drive sensibly there are fewer hold-ups- there'll be average speed cameras next.

If I had my way, all dual carriageways and motorways would be covered by a network of average speed cameras operating 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year.
I agree but I'm but more worried about speeding motorists in urban and densely populated areas. I'm sure they could roll out average speed cameras around towns and cities too.
