so, I understand so far that there are 3 options for using deep section rims:

1. buy new tubes with long valves
2. buy valve entenders where the core unscrews from the valve and then screws back into the extension
3. use valve extenders for non-removeable core valves

My questions:
1. is option one the best?
2. how exactly does option 3 work? Does the little screw bit remain undone on the tube?

Yes option one is the best and the only one you should use imho

option 1 seems like the least hassle, except if I get multiple punctures and end up asking a club mate for an innertube which wont have a valve long enough!

I use Topeak valve extenders (option 3). They work well (sometimes with a little ptfe tape to get a good seal) and mean that you can use just about any tube. Best to remover the extender once inflated though otherwise the valve rattles a bit.
