Thinking of selling a bike to fund another, i've no idea what to realistically price it at? Any rule of thumbs?

Bianchi via nirone 57cm, It cost me 1k 2years ago, Aluminium with carbon fork, excellent components (mix of ultegra & 105, fsa omega exo chainset),done a few thousand mile in all weather, been well maintained & serviced.

i think it's something like half the original price minus £10 for each year of age…

I would say about £500.

The answer is to keep it and buy another. Having never sold any of my bikes in the last 26 years - upgrades !!

My 'training' road bike has been through 3 frames (crash damage) and various components though - some of it is still original.

To get an idea have a look on ebay and see what similar bikes are going for, not nessecarily the same make model but similar bike/spec. Basically it will be worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it. You have factors like time of year to consider. Remember you can buy a new ali framed/carbon fork bike for around £500.

Presentation is everything so clean it up and post some good photos with your ad.

Good luck.

I always see 2nd hand stuff as somewhere between a 3rd and a half of the original price, if it's in half decent nick

I see the OP is in Northern Ireland which may make a difference.

Second hand cars, for example, fetch more than they do over here.

If you can wait sell it in the spring not now. Everyones skint after Xmas, weathers crap, bike shops doing big discounts on last years models now is a bad time to sell.

What are you changing to? If it's a similar style of bike, it'll be more economical to upgrade the frameset and move the parts across. I see a lot of people who have changed bikes and apart from a different frameset have an otherwise similar bike, they could have done that for half the cost.

Rough rule of thumb for second hand bikes and a lot of other second hand stuff - less 20% when it leaves the shop, plus 10% when it's no longer the current model, then 10% a year for two years, after that it's down to condition and desirability, it may stay at 50% of it's original value for years or quickly fall out of favour and you'd get next to nothing.

It's a great bike i have to say, but work are introducing a cycle to work scheme & i feel compelled to take advantage :-) , i've my eye on the new Carbon Ribble 365 as a winter steed, i've already got 3 yokes in garage, so another could strain marital relations.
