Gave the bike a thorough wash, degrease and relube yesterday and popped it on the stand to fine tune the indexing. Ended up being a marathon session of taking the cassette off to finally remove the dork disc, spending ages fiddling with the brakes etc.

I also learned two valuable lessons:

-- if you're adjusting your saddle height, don't undo the seat post clamp while the seat post is held in the work stand

-- when you find a loose spoke, don't randomly tighten up all the others a bit just in case, or you'll be desperately following wheel truing videos at 2am to sort a very wobbly wheel

All good fun and I won't be doing either again. Probably.

What have been your most valuable lessons?

When working on on a fixed gear transmision watch what you're doing with your fingers, a finger chain and cog interface aint nice, nor is the scramble for a large plaster afterwards, but at least I only split the end of my finger.

Don't change more than one thing at a time. Or in other words, see the change you make is working properly before making the next (learnt during hang gliding pilot apprenticeship (not completed)). Does not apply to double (gear) changes.
