Hi,
trying to get my aging mtb back on the road.. I have just tried to adjust the front canti brake but the housing that holds the adjustment screw is broken.
Now two questions ..
1) can i get a replacement adjuster (is it worth it if i can) or
2) can I replace the cantis with v brakes? will they fit on the same bosses or am i buggered?

cheers
Rih

Cantis and V rakes go on the same bosses.
V brakes do need V brake levers though - the cable pull is different.

anyone recommend some? I am thinking it might be more sensible to replace the brakes rather than try to fix up..

What Pete means is you'll need new levers for the v-brakes. Road and canti brakes require less cable pull to be operated than v-brakes. This is managed via the pivot point for the lever so shortpull levers don't go with v-brakes and vice versa.

If you need to get some levers then I would recommend the Avid Speedial 7s and they are generally on offer at a decent price.

should be fine, I've had 3 sets of Tektro v-brakes and they've all performed really well

it's only to get the old bike back on the road/canal track - will progress to an N+1 at some point - just don't know what yet (also need to lose a few (50+)lbs)

 now that one, the needing to lose 50lbs, I know well....v-brakes work admirably well at stopping my 18 stone.

the irony being, i was sorting the bikes out to ride with friends on some local tow paths and to start commuting on... but on the plus sides once sorted I'll actually have some brakes now.. may explain why it's been a bit crap before...

it's the plastic housing bit on the caliper tension adjuster that has split, so the screw has nothing to bite into. The levers are fine..
