Do the springs in V-brakes wear-out over time?

Mine no longer seem to have enough spring in them on the middle hole (welded boss on fork) so I've had to change them to the top hole - they are now very stiff and have too much spring tension - the middle hole has always been fine until recently.

I've had this happen. Though I just bent the spring arms out a bit to get back the tension.

As Mr P said, sounds like the cables to me. Had this same issue with my mechanical disc - Changing the cables fixed it.

Edit: Looks like you posted at the same time as me, hence I didn't see your post above.

I very much thought that the screw adjuster is for tension.

Increasing and decreasing tension either side enables you to centre the brakes.

The answer to your question is .....yes they can, It happened to my front XTR v-brakes. The brakes were replaced, as all options to overcome this problem (and I tried), failed.

well, I've just got in from the garden and, bending the spring rod things out further has worked fine, I'm not sure how many times this fix will work but it has done the trick this time. There is now a decent amount of tension again. I also wound both spring tension screws right in (before making necessary adjustments to make them equal) and this also gave a little bit more tension too.
