when fitting v brake pads that have a "crest" along on side, do i fit them with the crest facing down or up?

reason i ask is coz the pads have Right and Left labeled but if i fit them with the labels facing upwards, ie logically readable, the crests face downwards and im not sure if thats correct..?

The 'crest' should be upwards, so that the pad follows the arc of the wheel.

Also just to make sure the open end of the holders go towards the back of the pads, and the L and R should correspond to left and right relative to the rider when sat in the saddle.

thanks, in that case these pairs both go with the crest downwards as the r and l labels when sat on the bike, dictate that.

its really annoying!

with the crest down, and the labels oriented as you said, the little hex screw in the cartridge bangs against the inside of the fork. either its a crap design or ive got it wrong.

ive got the "tread" on the pad itself with the chevrons facing backwards, is that correct?

Hmm. I haven't used many pads with chevrons on them, but looking at pictures of some i would say they point backwards (makes sense with how they work as well)

Brakes or pads? I've never found Shimano pads to be much cop - the rubber has mediocre stopping power in the wet and tends to embed little flakes of metal which scratches the wheel rim.

The whole shebang. Go Outdoors, tenner a pop. Acera.

To be honest I've found what you describe happen with every pad I'ved used from Clarks rubber and cartridge pads through to the stock tektros.

Thanks

What pads are they? Strange the hex screw is hitting the fork. Are you running the pads well off the rim?

You can always get holders/pads that use pins instead of screws which will give more clearance eg Ashima.
