Hi All,

I've just been given a Concept rowing machine. It is very old; I've heard of the Concept 2, but I suspect that this is a Concept 1.

To alter resistance, there is a cover over the fan housing, which can be opened or closed as required. Sadly, this machine doesn't fold - good job I've a double-garage. Despite being ancient, the machine is a very solid piece of kit and looks as if it would last for ever.

Rather than doing a bit of aimless rowing, can anyone suggest any starter programs ?

Thank you.

I quite like the 500m / 1min rest option, good intervals to start with. Or just start with 1k and move up to 2k. Depends whether going for speed or stamina  I think there is some good info on the Concept website. It is key to get your form right when rowing or you could end up with all sorts of aches and pains. Cycling mitts are good for avoiding callouses too

Check out the training section of the C2 forum and see if there's anything you might find useful. As Vicster says, make sure your technique is correct - you can also find that on that link - otherwise your training wont be as effective. And, as with any exercise build it up gradually. A lot of what we do on the erg is based around HR zones so you might want to take that into consideration

Don't even think about it, man up!

I'll give it a go when I get home tonight - possibly with the cycling mitts.

The people on the Concept2 forum seem to rate this for starters:

Cheers Dave,

That looks a really good training plan !

I could/should be doing 12,000 metres by the end of the training plan.

A mate of mine is a former international runner; he swears by his Concept rower as a means of getting fit. He reckons that he is possibly the only person in the World with a combined time (verified) of under 5 hours for running a marathon and rowing (on a Concept 2) a marathon.

Frankly, if I can get up to rowing 12,000 meters, I'll be well impressed with myself.

Ta again, for the link !

AArrghh !

I've just seen a flaw in my plan - my rower is so old, that I'm not sure that it even has a distance counter on it !

I wonder if I could get one from Ebay ? I've just found out that mine is a Concept 2 Model B.

It explains why I was given the rower; I wondered why it had two loose wires hanging down - I wonder if a Concept 2 monitor/console fits on the Concept 2 Model B ?
