Ok, after trying to adjust the stem height on my boardman hybrid comp, something has gone horribly wrong.

I undid the bolt on the top of the headset and then unid the 2 stem bolts. Couldnt get the stem how i wanted it so attempted to tighten it all back up.

No ive tightened it up the headset rocks and wobbles like no ones business! Ive not removed any spacers or anything!

I really need this to get the 10 miles home in an hours time....

helllllp

If its any use on the top of the headset it says cartridge system?

Undo the 2 stem clamp bolts and tighten the top bolt until there is no wobble and still free turning. Then tighten the stem bolts back up.

Thanks, but no matter how hard i tighten the top bolt it still wobbles
Its almost like it isnt seated properly

The Glue that binds us together.
Loosen the 2 stem bolts, tighten the top bolt till there is no play in headset, then tighten both stem bolts, the spacers should be slightly higher than the fork steerer to allow you to tighten the top bolt down and pulls it all together,

You need to make sure you have pre loaded some pressure into the headset before you finally tighten up the stem bolts.

Bang the front wheel on the ground while holding the handlebars.
BTW, you can't adjust the stem height on your type of headset.

Ok, how do i do that?
Get the front wheel off the ground, the stem should be on but bolts loose.

tighten the top headset bolt this will draw the fork up so that the headset is preloaded with pressure.

Finally tighten the stem bolts and the movement should have gone.

OP did you put all the spacers back on? I once missed one out and spent about two hours wondering why I couldn't adjust it. Then I spotted a 3mm spacer in some debris under the workbench......

Funny that, only this week we had a clear out in the garage and I found a spring from a Mavic Q/R skewer lurking behind the chest freezer. I'd droped it at least five years ago and spent hours looking for it.

And last year when we emptied the shed prior to demolition I discovered the torque wrench I though I'd left at our previous address when we moved in 2001.

Now there's a couple of bits of useless information of no help to the OP whatsoever.

I'm still on the lookout for the half of a chain split link that flew off when I was splitting a chain and the end dropped and flicked around. It made no sound as it landed to I had no idea where it went but I'll find it one day....
