Hi Everyone,

Now that spring is nearly upon us, I'm thinking of upgrading my groupset, but as I'm a newbie I dont know what parts I should be buying and whether they'll be compatible!!

This is what my bike currently has.

Groupset:
Speed: 20 gears
Brake Levers/Shifters: Shimano Ultegra
Chainset: Mekk compact 50/34 (crank length varies according to frame size)
Bottom Bracket: BB86, Shimano
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra
Front Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra
Brake Calipers: Mekk dual pivot with cartridge pads
Chain: Shimano 10 speed
Cassette: Shimano 11-28

As its a 10 speed, I'm assuming that the shifters, derailers, and chain are based on the Ultegra 6700.

I'd like to upgrade the chainset to the Ultegra 6800. If I do this:

1. Will it be compatible with my current shifters?
2. Will it be compatible with my current derailers?
3. Will it be compatible with my current bottom bracket?
4. Will I need to buy a new 11 speed chain and cassette?

thanks for all replies and apologies if the questions seem stupid!

Upgrading a chainset is probably the least useful upgrade you could make to any bike. Unless it is purely for aesthetic purposes? It will go straight in though...

Not a stupid question but are you wanting to upgrade to an 11 speed geartrain?

If so, I would expect that you would need new shifters and derailleurs as well as an 11 speed cassette which may also require a new rear wheel unless the one you have is compatible with an 11 speed cassette. I would also expect to need new front and rear derailleurs (mechs). You would also need an 11 speed chain I believe.

IMHO the best way forward would be to source a good deal on either an Ultegra 6800 groupset or 105 groupset which will come with all the bits you need.

As for the BB, I'm not at all sure but no doubt someone else will answer.

If I were you I'd probably look at getting something like this rather than just a chainset;

Might only be 105 but it's supposedly as near as dammit as good as Ultegra, just a bit heavier.

Or if it's just a visual thing look out for a s/h Ultegra chainset and a nice set of calipers;I picked up some 6700 Ultegra calipers from CRC for £40.

Wheels would be the first thing to upgrade though.
