Ok, I have been riding my 2014 Trek Alpha 1.5 for a year now and now thinking of Upgrading the wheels. But I know little about the subject. my main worry is buying them then finding they are not compatible with my bike. My bike is running Shimano tiagra 10 speed. can anybody point me in the right direction

Just look for a wheel that ticks the boxes you want with a Shimano freehub. Most of them will be fine for a 10 speed cassette. If they are 11 speed you will get a spacer with the wheels so your cassette will fit.
You will need a chain whip and cassette removal tool if you intend to fit the new wheels yourself.

They are the standard Bontrager wheels that came with the bike. Budget is up to £400. nothing wrong with the existing wheels, just that reading past reviews of the bike the wheels were said to be heavy and not very lively. I am looking to improve my average speed. Not wanting to spend silly money on a carbon speed machine, but tweak mine enough to notice a difference

The campag zondas are a popular choice, or the fulcrum 3. Or if you want something a bit different, handbuilts

Have you already added better tyres, you'd be surprised how much difference those could make

You will read all kind of opinions on wheel upgrades.
Getting fitter is the best one!
If you just want to bling up your bike, then so be it. Nothing wrong with that either.
