I can't run to finding the 900+ readies for another bike.. so biting the bullet, decided to 'upgrade' for want of a better word the current bike.
Mavic Aksiums 2009 ordered - £50 off ... happyish.. (serious weight trimming seems to kick in at the £500 level)
a closer ratio 9 speed cassette plus tool

keeping an eye open for liteweight tyres and tubes, if anyone has any recommendations

Next on the list will be 105 double chainset - hoping that will be compatible with a 9 speed cassette and Tiagra front mech - but that's likely to be a end of season project

Have you got a budget? Good lightweight tyres are getting seriously expensive these days. Michelin Pro Race 3 are probably the best light all rounders or possibly Schwalbe Ultremo, both around the 180-200gm mark. Also heard good stuff about Vittoria Open Corsa CX and there's not much lighter around than a pair of Veloflex Records (135gm each), though puncture protection and durability on those is likely to be poor at best, not really an everyday tyre.

Both Continental and Michelin do lightweight butyl inner tubes.

Budget ..? as is oft quoted .. cheap as chips .. thats why I have waited in lair for the mavics at £130..
gone Conti ultra race with lite tubes.. I have used Conti gators for ages never a problem..
hopefully these will roll well and I will need secure feel to probably very changeable weather conditions when I race at end of month.

The HG80 cassette is lighter - just - but it gives me closer ranges more importantly.

I had a pair of those a while back. I liked them, but they did puncture quite often and picked up cuts really easily. Keep an eye on them.

What is your base bike Spartacus?, I am thinking of doing the same thing with my Giant SCR2 which is mainly Tiagra at the mo. Where did you get the Mavics?

just had a gander on Ebay. New Askium wheel sets from 130..maybe worth a look

Try Ribble at £122 http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/Produ...rodPerPage=999&CatID=82&BCat=1,82&RootCatID=1

Lightly used examples are going for around £80 - £90 on eBay

I have a set of Alex DA22 on my Giant. How do the Askium rate against these?

Anything could be better than DA22 - I also have them and absolutely hate them - buckle way to easy, way too flexy, and very heavy - I hate them, and so it is lucky I don't have to race on them, as they are my training wheels and nothing else. If I had some more money I would get some askiums myself to train on.
