Hi,

Currently own a 2009 Focus Cayo 105 road bike, which when bought new had 90% Shimano 105 groupset, with exception of the chainset which is FSA Gossamer Pro.

Now, there is nothing wrong with this chainset, but I haven't ridden anything else to compare. I just feel like keeping a uniformity about my bike mainly by making it 100% shimano.

Now usually with bikes I buy low spec and upgrade as and when parts disintegrate, which with low spec items is fairly quickly. But this bike had middle of the road spec groupset as standard which with the fully carbon frame and forks appealed so much when wiggle were offering it for £879!!!

I'm just looking at wiggle now and the 105 5600 Hollowtech II compact chainset is £166.47, which seems fairly reasonable, but the Ultegra SL 6650 Hollowtech compact chainset is only £21 more at £187.87.

My question and it is probably only down to personal opinion is; "Is there any benefit to upgrading to Ultegra?" If it is the case then I shall go down the road of gradually upgrading the components as and when they disintegrate.

As for Dura-ace, I hear my bank account crying as soon as I set eye on them.

Thanks,

Jon.

Unless it is a case of money burning a hole in your pocket, I wouldn't bother. If you are happy with the chainset's performance, you won't notice any difference by changing it alone.

As you say it's down to personal preference but my Kinesis has 105 sti's and cassette, SRAM chain, ultegra brakes and FSA cranks but I'm in no rush to mae things uniform they all work fine; it might be a consideration when they eventually wear out bth specs and price will overule.

What I will upgrade sometime when I have the cash is the wheels (Quasar at the moment), I think I will notice the upgrade there.
