I currently have a 2010 Cannondale Six (Aluminum frame). I’m interested in upgrading the wheelset after hearing lots about the potential benefits. The bike currently has a set of Mavic Ksyrium Equippe wheels. Approximately how much would have to be spent to see a significant difference. I’ve been looking at a few ‘slightly used’ sets e.g. Ksyrium Elite/SL. Can anyone recommend a good wheelset which would represent a real improvement from my current set-up for upto £500?

You would have to spend looooads of money to "see any real difference".

Your wheels are 1690g, which ain't too shabby. I challenge anyone to notice even 500g difference by changing wheels.

Keep your money.

Now if you want wheels that are sexier.....

Oh and wheels are not something I'd buy 'slightly used', but that's just me.

I have had both Equipes and SL's - in my opinion SL's are a wee bit bit faster but mainly a lot more bombproof and stiffer when out of the saddle. I'd keep with the Equipes as I don't get out of the saddle that much and am handy with a spoke key.

Save up for some deep section lightweights.

If you're buying from somebody you trust (like a club member) then I can't see the problem in buying second hand. For around £500 I'd be looking at Campag Neutron Ultras, discounted Dura-Aces, or maybe some HED Ardennes (but HED rarely discount so could prove tricky). All a bit classier than the ubiquitous (and possibly overrated) Ksyriums if you ask me.

And congrats on being able to spell Ksyrium btw!
