hi, i had a mtb which was a heavy bike, bought from jjb for £120, nothing special about it, my average speed was around 14mph, now i have a specialized secteur race bike and my average speed is around the 20mph mark, i aint doing any more effort and my computer is set up properly, the question i am asking is...is it normal for a jump in average speed of 6mph, not complaining lol, i just cant believe the difference

I jumped 1-1.5 mph when I got my secteur, but I had a hybrid with 28mm tyres before, so if you had big nobbly mbt tyres then yes sounds plausible.Still liking it I take it?

Sounds about right.
Ps, what you had from JJB was most likley not a bike, but a BSO (bicycle shaped object). BSO are about as slow and hard work as you can get. The speed increase from a proper MTB will most likley be smaller.

hi potsy, still enjoying it, its so easy to gather up speed frommy mountain bike or BSO lol, i didnt think i would like the skinny tires, or the hard ride or the razor seat....but i love it all
and yes Lee, it was a BSO, i originally bought it to get from a to b, not bothering about speed oranything like that, but then i got the cycling bug and it all changed from there, CTW scheme came up and i got a secteur, love it

yep, and 20mph is a very good average speed, as is 14mph on a heavy BSO MTB. You've obvioulsy benefitted from the training that MTB has given you. To avoid losing all of that, and seeing your Secteur speeds drop dramatically, you'll need to keep riding the MTB regularly for training:evil:

Sorry am i missing some thing here, are we talking about a mountain bike, so average speed has gone up from 14mph to 20mph.
if that is the case you need to take up racing, my average speed on the road bike at the mo is 18/19mph and that is with a garmin 705 and i am not fit due to the current weather, and i am a former GB rider who can avarage 20mph when fit no problem.
me thinks your computer is set up wrong? or you are a decent rider whom needs to get on the program.

Their computer probably stops recording when they stop or go very slow. Correct me if I'm wrong but your Garmin is probably giving you a true average not just the average when on the move like most bike computers.

Sounds about right. BSO MTB to mid priced MTB about 2 mph.
Mid priced MTB to tourer or hybrid about 2 mph
Mid priced MTB to fast road bike about 4 mph

If you can average 20mph why not have a go at some time trials with a local club. I did when younger and found it very enjoyable and an incentive to train rather than just 'go for a ride'.

A lof of people glance down at their computer a few times on a ride, note the speed and assume that is their average speed.

No the Garmin has an Auto Pause function, which is far more accurate than other Bike computers, as you can set the speed at which you would like it to pause and resume recording.
And of course this would be a true moving average, as it disregards waiting time at traffic lights etc
I must admit to thinking that the guys comp must be well wrong, 20 mph average he should be looking to get in a team somewhere!

I've averaged 20mph, measured using my Garmin Edge 705 over 25 miles - and I am nowhere near fast enough to join a race team!

Quite fast enough for local club time trials though. When I used to do them we had people who were able to do 25 miles in 50 minutes, down to people who could only just manage 10 miles in 50 minutes. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and a good social event as well.

I never did join the faster bunch, and now would be in the slower category if I did them!

This makes me wonder what sort of average speed jump I'll get when I change from riding my old BMX commuting bike to my road bike :becool:

(I dont know my average speed on my BMX, probly about 10mph, furthest Ive ever ridden it was 10 mile in about an hour - then back ache from not being able to sit down caused quittage! lol - Not particularly accurate worked out using google maps and my watch )
