Rightly or wrongly, I standardised on Shimano XT 4 pot discs but could not fit the rear caliper to a Gary Fisher x-claiber frame - this has the unusual mount where the caliper sits in between the chain and seat stays.
Having bought a bike with Magura Marta disc brakes, I worked out that the front caliper will fit at the back of the GF but with an adapter. I duely made the adapter, fitted the front caliper at the back and the rear caliper (IS mount) on the front, which does work albeit it needs a 180 mm disc.
All is fine and dandy but I wanted to have the Magura Marta disc brakes on my Bianchi light bike build. I managed to get off ebay a Magur Marta front brake so was able to fit the Marta (carbon levers) to the Bianchi and the XT brakes to the Gary Fisher using XT lever and Marta caliper.
Have you died of boredom yet?
Doing the sums, the Marta piston is 2x size of the Shimano XT 4 pot so I wasn'tsure if this mix would work - there'd be too much lever travel.
Anyways it is fine - the lever is a tiny bit more spongy than the front due to longer hose and has slighlty more travel but nowhere near as bad as I expected. So a result all round.
The Magura Marta brakes in total are about 160 g lighter than the Shimano XT 4 pots to I am getting closer to the magic sub 10.0 kg bike build.
