I gave it up this year after 30 years, I don't dare have a ciggy or I'll be back on them again. Strange perhaps for an addict, but I can't imagine why you would want to, what do you enjoy about your occasional smoke? I do enjoy the occasional 'herbal smoke' though

'Occasional' was in it's loosest sense. Herbalism is a fine relaxation.

I think the world is a duller place for not having so many smokers around. I'm not, and never have been one yer 'onour (save for the odd rollie/cadged ciggie with a pint back in the day). But like some others, have always thought being in the company of smokers more interesting than otherwise.

Yep, I gave up 13 years ago but know that one puff and I'd be heading to the shop to buy a packet. It's knowing that that stops me having the one puff.

I read Jimmy Greaves' autobiography a few years back and he referred to an interview where someone described him as a former alcoholic and he corrected them saying he would always be an alcoholic, just that now he's an alcoholic that doesn't drink.

That's the way I consider myself with smoking. I'll always be a smoker it's just that now I'm one who doesn't smoke.

I quit 5 years ago this June, I'd been a smoker for 25yrs, the last 10 of which i'd been on a pouch a day. I enjoyed my rollies & had absolulty no desire to quit.
I'd never smoked indoors or in confined spaces/close proximety with my children though. #3 was always a bit wheezy but the Dr said he wasn't asthmatic, woke up middle of the night & could hear the strangest of sound, went to investigate - was my littlest bubba, blue in the face & gasping for breath, 999'd straight to hospital. He was kpet in for 2 days, the first 24hours on a ventilator. On coming out his father came round & took him to his house for an hour (he lives with his parents, & all 3 of them smoke) My son returned stinking of fag smoke - I was furious, he just come out of hospital after suffering a massive asthma attack & they'd been smoking round him. I announced that if they couldn't go without a fag for 60 mins while he was there then I wouldn't let him go again.
I quit that day on sheer principle & I have never regretted it, i've never had any cravings, have no desire whatsoever to ever smoke again, i'll quite happily hold a mates fag while she rummages in her handbag or answers her phone, ...And I quickly found that the money I saved could be put to good use, an extra holiday a year & most importantly I can buy lots of cycling type goodies!!!

I would like to smoke - I smoked for maybe five or six years (didn't start till I was 34, ffs) and gave up for the second time four months ago. I'd previously given up (apart from the odd one) for nearly a year, but this time I'm not even having the odd one since, as others have said, you'll be back on them before you know it if you do that. All that said, I still like hanging around smokers - they're generally more relaxed people - and if I was diagnosed with something which gave me six months to live, I'd be straight to the 24 hour garage for a packet of liquorice rizlas and some Golden Virginia. And a big bag of weed from the local yoof.:becool:

I stopped about 7 years ago, but when I took up cycling, there was always this bloke i'd see, half way along my journey, pulled up, stood next to his bike, having a ciggy......

He vanished after 6 months though .......
