I bought a pair of wheels off Ebay, mainly for the hubs which were stated to be Campag.

They've just arrived and the rear hub has no branding that I can see, although a genuine Campag 8 speed cassette is fitted and it does have a Campag QR.

The front has the winged shield and the same type of QR as the rear. In comparison with the rear the front is a much nicer finish: it is bright and smooth, where as the rear is dull and slightly blemished (although this could be from the road rather than the factory)

In all other respects the wheels are a matched pair: the rims and spokes being identical.

Am I right to be dubious about the rear hub?

Looking on Velobase, I found these 8sp Athena hubs and under Body Markings, it states "Wing logo front, Spring clip rear".

Is the spring clip to be found under the cassette?

I don't have a set of Athena 8 speed hubs, but I suspect, given that is the case for Record hubs I have, that the spring clip refers to the band (see pic below) wrapping round the middle of the rear hub, not under the cassette. On Record hubs that spring clip covers the grease hole so you don't have to strip the hub to grease it.

Accountantpete is the Campag expert and he might be able to help further.

Obviously you'd upload a picture if you could. As you haven't done so, how about the eBay listing picture (or the listing itself so we can all have a laugh over how much you paid? JOKE!!!!)

I'm not familiar with the Athena hubs - it may be that towards the end of production they stopped putting the clip on. The group below - Veloce - had unmarked hubs and were essentially the same I believe so it could be one of those.

The only thing I can suggest is checking the axle which may have some identifying markings on it.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I've no idea what groupset they're from, the Athena from Velobase were just an example. I thought that Campag branded everything, hence my doubt.

The QR have plastic end caps (the same shape as in RAFN photo above, but the handles are smooth and not ridged), which would suggest a lower groupset.

I'll whip the axles out as you suggest.

I have come across brakes and rear mechs from lower groupsets of that era where "Campagnolo" was simply painted on, which has since been rubbed off, leaving just a very faint shadow that is literally invisible.

If you are taking it apart, page 59 of this 1997 spare parts catalogue might help to confirm. I think the chance is pretty good what you have is genuine, I don't know if there were any 3rd party producer of Campag 8 speed freehubs - they first came out around 91 and were being phased out by 95/96.

I've got two Campag 8 speed wheelsets and both rear hubs are unmarked - one has the oiler clip (Record?) and one doesn't. I'd like to know more about this too, if anyone has more info.

After a bit more research - it seems that Campy generally stopped putting it's oiling ring on rear hubs for the lower groups in the mid 90's but still included them on some models . For 1995 this included the Veloce. The hubs were more or less identical so it was just cosmetic.

The main campy site has old catalogues - here is the 1995 one re hubs (half way down).

The market for Campy 8/9spd has gone nuts - I'm having to go 11spd as it's cheaper!
