Hi guys helping a mate put together a 10 speed ultegra groupset,he is building it from ribble and wants the shifters chainset to be ultegra but happy to build with cheaper otherparts from 105 and tiagra, like the chain and cassette and brakes to keep the cost down etc.He was wondering what other chains are compatible as he likes the quick link from sram.Basically wanting to know what he should pay his dollar for and what to cut cost on.Should he buy cheaper deraillers or is this false economy

any help appreciated

chainset and calipers would be my choices - there are cheaper options out there which are as good. Any 10sp chain will do...

Stick to Shimano chains. Modern 105 and higher chains are actually asymmetrical with the links on one face being different to links on the opposite and give a buttery smooth shift. I'd just save my pennies and go 105 throughout rather than up some parts to Ultegra abd the expense of downgrading others to Fisher Price.

Avoid Shimano chains like the plague.^_^
KMC joining links are better than SRAM's but both are better than that god-awful frangible pin on Shimano chains.

You can certainly save money on the chainset - but why when that's the most visible part?
What credibility would you have if you claim to have an Ultegra equipped bike..... but it's got a big "Tiagra" on the side.

Ok Pete I have spoke to him and is happy to pay the extra for all ultegra, but likes the idea of the kmc chain with quick link.

What chain would you recommend instead of the shimano

You could save weight and money with different brakes and crankset. Planet X make brakes that are nice and light and don't break the bank. Chainsets, there are plenty of options.

For brakes:
These cost about ~£7 more than a single Ultegra brake, for the pair and the pair weight ~100g less than a pair of Ultegra brakes. Saving ~100g and about £45-50.

If you want to pay approx the same as a pair of Ultegra (saving of ~£7) these will save ~125g. They come with Swisstop pads too.

You might be able to get a nicer chainset for the same money though  Esp if the frameset has a BB30 bottom bracket.

Hi guys we were asking about the cheaper components to ultegra as he is building the groupset from ribble parts instead of a full groupset,he was under the impression that there was no advantage buying ultegra chain, cassette and thought the cheaper ones were just as good.
About the kmc chain what chain would you guys recommended
