Apparently Shimano Ultegra 6700 and maybe 105 5700 shifters are jamming and the reason is this little retaining nut which helps hold the gear mechanism in place unloosens itself through normal use.

Just took this nut from my working shifter and put it on my jammed shifter and it works perfectly now but I now need to locate another nut for the other shifter which is proving quite hard to locate .

Anyway thought I would just post this as someone maybe able to tell me where I can get this part or even find out what the part code is as Shimano docs is unhelpful plus for anyone who has a jammed shifter lying they can just pull the brake lever fully and look down through the gap into the shifter and see if the nut is missing.

Sounds reminiscent to a small spring breaking on my Shimano Sora shifter. Had to buy a new shifter as I could not locate the spring. Total waste of an old shifter as the rest was still perfectly in order. I am likely to buy a new bike with 105's on it so I will be following this thread with interest.
Do you think this problem be prevented by using Loctite ?

Yes seems a waste not to fix things, yes Loctite should fix it , this was my second L/H shifter to go but this one was out of warranty so I decided to try and fix it , took me a few hours yesterday figuring out what was wrong then 15 minutes today to fix it .

I did get about 3000 miles out of both before they jammed .

I would consider that unacceptably quick, especially considering the cost of replacing them. If and when I get my bike I will check and get out the Loctite! Good luck, thanks and I will watching the thread unfold !

It appears Shimano do not do Customer Support and the part is not listed so will need to try and find a broken shifter and get the part that way .

I had the same problem when looking for a spring, it really is not on, but what can you do. Hopefully you can find a cheap one for spares.

And I bet Shimano have never seen this problem before. Or that there's no call for this part.
