Hi All,

I'm trying to replace my Ultegra STI 6603 Triple with a 6700 Double as I don't use the Granny Ring and of course its cheaper!. Do I need to change the Chain ring to a Double or the existing Triple Chain ring will do, as long as I set it up properly. Anyone has any experience on this?

Thanks in Advance,
Gerry

You seem unclear about what needs to be done.

A triple gives a lower gear for hill-climbing as well as closer ratios, without the annoying gap that you get between big and small rings on a compact double. A double is slightly lighter and probably the front derailleur is easier to set up. Some purists insist that triples should not be used on road bikes but for touring they are ideal.

To go from triple to double you will need a new crankset, new front derailleur and new STI shifter, quite a lot of expense just to lose one chainring!

I take it your 6603 lever is knackered and your buying the 6700 double as replacement because it is cheaper than the 6703 , think it should be Ok

Hi Eddy,
Exactly, I crashed my Bike on the DunRun at the weekend and now my LeftHand Shifter is damaged, there is too much resistance when I pull the Brake. It seems that the 6703 is not very popular and more expensive, because I don't use the Granny Ring I might as well go for the cheapest option. A pair of 6700 cost £149 from Planet X and the cheapest 6703 is £199!

Sorry, I'm a bit unclear with my post. I damaged my Shifter on the Dun Run and the cheapest option if it works is to buy 6700 Double.

I have Ultegra on one bike and 105 on another and the difference is just a few grams as the Ultegra have carbon levers so if I was to buy a new set if the ultegra broke I would just replace with 105 instead , 100 quid if you shop around

Thanks Eddy, I will look into the 105 solution.

You can buy the left hand shifter separately, if your main concern is the difference in price.
I think it will look a bit odd if I have one new shiny shifter. I just thought if I could loose the granny ring at the same time..

Actually the question is does the Triple has the same amount of movement compare to the Double?
I have just measured the gaps between the chainrings and its 8mm, if the Double has the same spacing I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work.
