I've been trying to fit the gear cables onto the Ultegra 6700 shifters for my Ridgeback Platinum update. The cables are being attached to Dura-Ace 7800 front and rear mechs.

However, despite following the Shimano video they're just not working. I'll get a couple of clicks and then nothing.

So, any suggestions please?

I've put the cable through the hole and they're coming out the correct end. Do I need to move a lever or something to get them to stay?

I like to think I'm a competent home mechanic. I can strip and rebuild a bike, true wheels, remove stubborn bottom brackets, replace headsets etc etc.

When I needed a cable replaced in my 6700 shifter I spent about 3 hours trying...then gave in and paid the nice man at my local bike workshop a tenner:rolleyes:

Just a thought, and a similar thing happened to me. As you peel back the hoods to fit the cable it is possible to dislodge a small lever actuator which moves the indexer. Have a look to make sure this isn't just sticking out. It simply needs pushing back in again.

sounds as if its not indexed properly...
undo from the cable from the Mech , set the shiffter into its lowest gear/position then tighten the bolt on the mech
failing this the gear cable has been inserted incorrectly through the shiffters

Thanks all - I've spent the past hour with the video, paper instructions and others. The cables are seated properly, the actuator in, it's fitted to the F&R derailleurs where I would with my 105 shifters. Still I get a couple of clicks and then it appears to move out of position and not click any more.

In the end I've given up; it'll be off to the LBS on Tuesday before I get cross with it.
