Hi all,

I currently have a Sora front mech (9 speed) which is looking a bit worse for wear.

I have an Ultegra front mech (10 speed) and was thinking of fitting this. I have noticed that the 'cage' is narrower by about 1-2 mm and was wondering if anyone had tried a 10 speed front mech on a 9 speed chain. will it work ok or should I just get a 9 speed mech?

Hi Dave,
It should work OK - my commuter has a 105 front mech (10 speed), with an 8 speed chain and 8 speed cassette, and gives me no problems whatsoever. You may need to spend some time setting it up correctly, on the assumption that you use indexed shifting; mine has down tube friction shifters, real old school stuff!

It won't ruin the bike to try it out.

In theory the wider chain may contact the edge of the cage when running at angles - but if you have a trim feature then you should be ok.
