I have just received a call from my LBS saying that the bike I ordered 2 weeks go (which was meant to be in yesterday) has been delayed for another 3 weeks as there is none in stock!! The bike is a Trek 1.9 (60cm) and I had no idea that it would be so difficult to get one.

Has anyone else had any issues with lack of stock or can anyone advise as to whether a 5 week period is standard for delivery....surely not?

I am 6' 3" and after visiting 2 shops, one said I should get a 62cm bike but the one I ordered from were more comprehensive and said a 60cm would do.

So my question is if I could get a 62cm in stock should I consider taking it?

5 weeks isn't a big issue - don't forget it's a popular model, within cycle scheme pricing....

Unless the bike is physically in the shop, it has to come via the importer, and if none in, they have to wait for stocks.

Thanks guys. I know what you mean about popularity etc but the 60cm bike had the seat out quite so I thought if the seat on the 62 was reduced slightly then my reach to the bars would be similar!

I'm not going to be competing or looking to break any records so 2cm to me is minimal and I'm keen to get it sooner rather than later.

Call me stupid but I just thought 2cm wouldn't be a huge difference!! (and before anyone says it, I know 2cm is a lot to some people

It may or may not make any difference to you wee...but what happens is the bar height is more or less fixed....you dont have much, if any adjustment, so may find yourself leaning down too much on a smaller frame.

Your height is only one consideration - albeit definitely a major one. The other big one you need to think about is inside leg. Interesting that two shops came up with two answers - might it be worth visiting a third? Not for a definitive answer, but if they also said 62, it would make you think...

Thanks swee'pea99, I have a 34"/35" inside leg and I know people who are my height and ride a Spesh 58cm but then again maybe it is a different set up all together.

Does anyone else have a similar leg length and if so what size of frame do you have?

I am 6ft 3 with an inside leg or 34/35 and I ride a XXL 60cm Specialized's

60cm for a Trek should be ok

I have about a 34 inch inside leg and a 56cm trek 1.7...the 58 was definitely too big, and the 54 a bit too upside down (I'm only 6foot tho).

Sounds like it was a good job I got mine when I did - only took 2 days!

I was in earlier this week just for a blether. The owner was saying there have been 4 price increases this year on Bianchis and delivery for any (all stock) orders was 2 months minimum....they are Bianchi and Specialized dealers.

Well what do you know...after calling around and discovering that there were 3 60cm 1.9's available in the UK, I called my LBS and told them the news. They then told me that because I am in Northern Ireland, they get all of their stock from Dublin and not the UK!! I then said that this is crazy and kicked off saying how dissapointed I was.

Surprise surprise, they called me this monring saying that they "pleaded" with their Dublin suppliers who have agreed to get one from the UK for Monday meaning I will have it on Tuesday  Mind you it's a double instead of a triple....will it make a huge difference? (not that I'm worried, just glad I have my bike for the bank holiday weekend bike run)...WHOO HOO!!

I've just experienced the same sort of problem sourcing a camcorder. I suspect stores are being VERY careful to avoid buying stock they can't sell immediately. Their wholesalers are shy of holding stock so in turn order from the importer or manufacturer and we all wait. I remember the same kind of problem in ordering in past recessions.

Same here. Ordered a cannondale synapse from my LBS and was told initially 2 weeks for delivery. 2 weeks later I was told it would be at least another month. 1 month later still no bike, it would be 6 more weeks at least.

But, got a big discount on the display model in the shop so took it instead. It was the right size anyway:smile:

All the manufacturers are cutting back on production + none of the bike shops are keeping any spare stock at the moment. Get used to it. It'll be like this for years

At this time of year Bike distributors are often low on many models, especially high end, 5 weeks is nothing unusual.

They can also get caught out when certain models have a sudden increase in sales, mid range sports bikes this year have proved far more popular than normal, Specialized for example have sold out of all their 'Allez' price range sports bike, only one model in one size is currently available from stock!
