I'm looking for the best means of getting a set of OS maps onto my android phone and possibly PC and ipad also. What I need is something that would show my position on the OS map on my phone, route plotting may be an advantage, though I don't tend to use it that much at the moment. It just happens that every now and then I need to know where I am so I can check my route. I see that OS themselves have an app, available via a subscription service, any other suggestions?

I posted this picture in another thread yesterday:

It shows the same local route displayed on OS maps on my Windows laptop, Android phone and Android tablet. I believe that apps are also available for Apple devices.

The software used is Memory Map, currently available for the whole of GB (minus NI) for the bargain price of £50 for the download version. (If you ever want to print maps out consider paying a bit more for the 'HD' version, but be warned - the HD map file is a lot bigger and may not fit on a phone or tablet with limited storage space.) You can install the software on up to 5 of your devices. LINK.

Hmmm, I've got the light version of mapquest on my phone, with road maps rather than OS maps. I've used it once or twice but it seemed a bit clunky, but maybe that was just operator error!

Great job demonstrating on multiple devices @ColinJ
Another vote for Memory Map here. The 1:50,000 for £50 is a bargain and an excellent scale when the device (phone etc) has a GPS which can precisely position you on the map. With paper maps I found 1:25,000 useful for location purposes but a bit too big for route planning. The precise location + 1:50,000 is a great tool.

Yes - 1:50,000 for cycling.

I have just treated myself to the 1:25,000 version for planning walks, where the extra detail is very useful. That works really well on the laptop but I have come up against those file size problems that I mentioned in my previous post. It is supposed to be possible to split the map file into smaller regions so I am going to have to work out how to do that. I will probably do Wales, Southern England, Northern England, Southern Scotland and Northern Scotland, with generous overlaps.

I have used my phone's GPS to show me where I am on the 1:50,000 map a couple of times. That was when taking wrong turns on walks. (The 1:25,000 version would have been better.) The phone (Galaxy S4) takes a fairly long time to lock on to the satellite signals but after that it is fine. It does eat the battery life though, so I only use the map/GPS on the phone when I really have to.

If you buy the new ~OS MAPS~ you get a free download for your phone/tablet by entering the supplied code. It depends how far afield you want to travel as it could start getting expensive.
You will also, obviously, have the paper map as well.

Paper OS maps ARE things of beauty but buying lots of them DOES soon gets very expensive. If you live in the middle of the area covered by one then you need that map and potentially another 8 surrounding ones unless you live near the coast, and that is just for local rides. At £8.99 a map that is over £80! There are over 200 Landranger maps covering the UK!

The Memory Map software I mentioned above lets you print out your own maps of whatever bits of the giant UK map you want paper copies of. TBH, I have never really felt the need. I have my old paper maps for this area and a few that I bought for holidays in the past, but I just stick to the digital versions now.
