Bit of bother with punctures lately, as a realtive newbie only really heard about puncture resistant/kevlar tyres. Any recommendations, are they worth it, what sort of price should I be paying?

I have a pair of schwalbe marathon plus on my kettler :becool: and I got them for the puncture resistance. Think they were £30 each at CRC but check the net. Beware though: I'm sure the main tyre is pretty puncture resistant, but somehow a piece of grit got into the tyre in between it and the tube, so I still got a puncture! So if you decide to buy, don't dispense with the extra inner tube on longer journeys or that tube repair stuff in the canister (which I haven't tried)

tube repair stuff in canister... fine on an MTB tyre as a get you home measure, dont even bother trying on a high pressure road tyre.

Marathon Plus is as close as you can get to Puncture proof .... but nothing is 100%, and it is a slow heavy tyre to ride.

Personally I prefer the lighter forms of resistance... Schwalbe tyres with "Raceguard" puncture protection strip are good IME, but any £20 - £30 tyre from a reputable manufacturer which they class as "puncture resistant" is going to be loads better than a cheap £5 - £10 tyre. Michelin Dynamics for example seem to be utter sh1te.

The Marathon Plus are very good indeed and I have them on my winter commuter. No punctures in nearly 5k miles over 2 winters. But they're heavy and I feel it on a Thurs / Fri commute.

I also have the Bontrager Racelite Hardcase on my nice weather commuter and I think they're about the best balance between puncture protection, performance and price.

They're what is considered a stock tyre - i.e. not usually the top-end stuff.

Durano+, Conti 4 seasons, or the Bonty hardcase are all well thought of as a fast, protected tyre.
