Tyres?

My first road bike arrived, and has come fitted with slick tyres which may be ok in summer and dry, but don't think it will be too useful in the wet over winter?

Are there any recommendations for tyres over winter to be used? Don't think I will need studded as I won't be using it in ice.

They will be fine in the wet over winter.
Just as long as you avoid painted lines and road metal work.

There really is no need to go to the extra expense of new tyres until they wear out.

Slick tyres mean more of your tread is in contact with the road compared to nobbles = more grip, if that your concern. Also if you concerned about aquaplaning dont be a narrow high pressure tyre cant aquaplane untill you go in excess of circa 100mph (even Cav can't do that), they cut through the water instead.

Thanks, that is good to hear, it means I have £50 to spend on other gadgets then now too

Indeed...
However, please learn how to look after your tyres, especially over the winter. Wet and damp roads will cause crap to stick to the tyres which will eventually work it's way in and cause a puncture.
After every ride, quickly scan your tyres for any debris sticking to them, glass, stone, flints, thorns etc. You will be surprised at how much crap you will find. Dig all that stuff out.
It is a hassle, but try getting into the habit of checking and you will save yourself some grief at a latter date.
