My conti ultra gatorskin have done some 5000 miles and appear to be picking up numerous punctures averaging one per week..should I call it a day? or keep repairing/replacing inner tubes. I have noticed lots of holes/punctures on the tyres themselves and it looks as if bits of glass are breaking the tyre wall..is it time for a new set...and if so what is recommended as puncture proof 700x23c

New tyres time !

Cheap and good Mich Lithion 2's or Krylions. Very good, but expensive = Conti GP 4 Seasons - harder wearing than the Lithions, but you can get 3 Lithions for one 4 Season.

And no one mention Marathons they weigh more than yer bike !

my bike came fitted with maxxis detonator - they've been splendid so far. i just looked them up for the first time £23 odd quid - is that for one or a pair?!

I usually use numerous p'tures as a guide as to when to replace, so my back tyre is still there no p'tures (touch wood) its done 2900miles on the front of the bianchi, before another 4900 miles on the front of the kinesis and its now done another 1100 on the rear (a wired Conti Gran Prix). I think my last Conti 4 seasons got over 7000 miles before p'tures. I'm a fan of the continentals but speaking to an experienced and champion cyclist the other week he reckons Mitchellin Pro Grips are the best 700x23 tyres out there.

For something a bit lighter than a Marathon I would reccomend the Durano+, had mine for 5000 miles now and it's still going strong.
Not the cheapest but reliable and very easy to get on the rim

For a 23mm tyre i would use a bontreager hard case, not quite as good for puncture protection as a gatorskin but better performance and grip.
The only above par Marathon doesn't come in 23mm.
