In summer I'm planning to use my Sirrus Elite Disk for touring. There will be quite a lot of off road - nothing extreme, just Sustrans tracks. At present I have Specialized Nimbus 700x28 tyres supplied with the bike. What would people recommend? I am weary of going too fat, because the rims look very shallow and I have SKS mudguards fitted.

28c would be fine but if you need more comfort try 35c. That is if there is sufficient clearance.

I use the same tyres on my Spesh Sirrus but the Armadillo variants though I have hand built Mavic A719 wheels with Shimano 105 hubs. Most I can get on the back is 35c and on the front 32C but at the moment I have 28C on both front an rear. Your tyres will be fine on Sustrans paths as long as you avoid the broken glass, cans, chavs and chav dogs, vomit and burned out cars.

HTH.
