I just bought a Pompino that's a few years old. I plan to ride it on the road as a fixed wheel and so the Navigator Pista clincher wheelset (rear Novatec hub threaded both sides) is ideal for my immediate purpose. In the autumn though I may have a crack at cyclocross. I'll flip the rear wheel and use a freewheel so I can go single speed. My question is about tyres, What's the minimum useful width for a CX tyre and will I be able to fit this to the Pista wheelset? I've tried to find specs for the wheels but to no avail.

I reckon that you wouldn't want to go below 32mm on a CX tyre. Can't help on the clearances I'm afraid. May be worth a trip to a shop to see if they'll let you experiment?

There's oodles of clearance on a Pompino. It was more a question of what would be the maximum width of the tyre for these rims. Thanks for the replies.

There must be alternative versions then as mine definitely have a braking surface. I'm currently running a Condor cantilever on the front and it's working fine! Put another way if what my pads are rubbing against is not supposed to be a braking surface it's awfully flat and does a very good job
