Road bike tyre choice..is it all down to speed v puncture proof protection.
I'm currently using a set of Schwalbe Durano Plus 700c x23 tyres..I've always used this tyre even knowing the rolling resistance is greater then other brands.
I even leave them on all year..especially as most country roads are a minefield of pot holes and debris.

I can honestly say punctures on a ride out are a pain in the backside and since using these have never had a flat..(touch wood )..Do we all compromise some speed when choosing rubber or are you happier to take a chance and go light weight.

I fitted Marathon Pluses to my Trek hybrid when I got it last May, I haven't had one puncture in 6000 miles. I know what will happen now.... So, for me, the loss of speed is no real concern...but I'm not really a serious rider like some of you guys (well apart from the distance travelled).

Conti gator hardshells for me....they seem to roll well, have good puncture protection and without London traffic/lights to hold me up I can sustain around 20mph for a good while.
So thumbs up for the conti's.
I have had faster, slicker Mavic's, but London roads just rip the crap out of them. Better rolling, but uneconomical.
I am happy with the Conti's for now. And they were £40 each. So not so cheap.

Unless you are an elite rider or racing seriously, the difference in speed of tyres will be barely noticeable. I also use Durano Plus and they roll reasonably well for such a robust tyre.

Gatorskins have seen me fall off twice this winter. I was warned that they were rubbish when it gets cold but I ignored the little slides, then there were a few bigger slides then I came off.

Thought it was a one "off" so to speak but a few days later the same happened.

Changed to Schwalbe Duranos and haven't had the slightest slip since.

Mending a puncture or simply replacing a tube on the road is no problem and it doesn't compromise your rolling speed while you're stopped. I think my first consideration is ease of repair. Which means using a tyre that isn't going to skin your thumbs when you try to take it off the rim. If the tyre rolls smoothly, doesn't divorce a wet road, gives reasonable puncture protection and comes off easily, that's enough for me. Rubino Pros are the tyres I use on my road bike, the tourer is waiting for a pair of folding Marathon Supremes to go on - I was told that they're not epic to unrim. I'd have changed them already but I can't face getting the old tyres off....

(Not that they're renowned for being difficult - Conti Contour Plus - I find they're such a struggle that I've been known to walk 3 miles home before plucking up the courage to mend them.)

I used Marathon + tyres on the hybrid and they were bomb-proof for three years. When I got a road bike to commute on, I got highly poncified ideas about being some kind of geriatric roadie, and had a quite a few punctures using Conti GP Four Seasons. ( My pride also suffered a few punctures...). They did roll a bit better however, and it wasn't the end of the world if I got to work late, so I enjoyed the ride quite a bit more.
