It seems the only way to find which is best for you is to try out different tyres.
I really liked the Vittoria Rubino Pro's but for me they started to puncture after only 1000 miles, I then tried Conti GP4000s tyres which are in my experience are as good as the Vittoria's but seem more resilient and will be the tyre I choose when they need replacing.
But it comes down to personal experience in the end and a bit of experimentation.

Value wise I reckon Vittoria Zaffiro (£8 ish) are hard to beat.

Only if you have no desire to remain upright on damp roads. A pair of these came fitted to my Planet X. They're frankly nothing short of bloody dangerous in anything other than bone dry conditions.

Personally I like Michellin Lithions - good tyres at reasonable prices.

Don't skimp on tyres - Is it really worth it when a couple of thumb sized patches of rubber are the only contact point between bike and road at speeds which can approach 50mph?

Reasonable is a relative term ;)

Relative to cost, p'ture resistance, rolling, wear, grip, weight etc

I've found Mitchelin Kyrlion Carbons to be the best all rounders, they are a bit like hens teeth to get hold of though and I've recently replaced the rear (after 5000miles, when I got 3 p'ture in a row up till then I'd none) with a Mitch Pro 4 Endurance, the successor to the Krylion.

I know nothing about tyres but I do know that with the miles HLaB puts in if he recommends a tyre then you should put it to the top of your list.

I bought the Michelin Krylion Carbons for my winter/commuter bike based on a similar thread I started and HLaB's recommendation.
Not had a single problem in any condition so far. Top tyre.
Took me a bit of googling to track them down but got a really good price though.
If you're after an all-rounder then these are the ones - I can't comment on the Pro4 replacements however if you can't find the krylions.

I didn't like the Conti GP 4 season as they wore very quickly and punctured too easily for an all year round tyre.

My best bike has the Conti GP4000s fitted. They're also the best I've tried on that bike but they're only ever used on good days

They would be my two recommendations depending on the type of riding you need them for.
