An 18mm tyre? On the rear as well! Damn

Do you know the make and model of the rim?
If not can you measure the distance between the inside edges of the rim? It should be around 13mm but it's nice to make sure.

A 700x23 will be fine
A 700x25 should also be fine but check that rim width.

The 25 will be more comfortable without reducing performance. An 18 or 20 tyre is rarely used outside racing and will be uncomfortable on the bumpy roads.

Hi

I have just got my 20 year old bike on the road, which I've not ridden for 12 years. It's got 700x20c tyres on I want to replace. I'm thinking of using 700x23c. Will this result in a reduction in speed? I'm not going to be racing but I like to go as fast as I can by myself. Will the reduction in performance be negligible? There are some pretty naff road surfaces around here, so if a wider tyre results in a smoother ride, maybe I shouldn't be worried. After all I'm no Mark Cavendish!

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Cheers.

Phil.
