Hi, after a disastrous commute this morning - 2 different bikes and 2 separate flat tires - I think it's about time I get some new tyres for both my bikes.

Any recommendations gratefully received. They are a voodoo hoodoo mtb on which I currently have 26x2.2. The more grip the better although I do commute on the roads in winter but still off road too.

And an avanti road bike but I'm afraid I have forgotten the make. Using 700x23 tyres, again would have to double check. I still would like some grip not too worried about how fast they are.

As reasonably priced as possible and something tough/durable/ puncture resistant ideally for both bikes.

Thought I would put a pic of each up although not sure if that's any help. Thanks for any help.

Depends what you use the road bike for. If it's mainly as per pic, I'd say get some Durano Plus probably in 25s. You'll still get some punctures but probably not as many. If it's for commuting or if you really don't care about how fast they are get some Marathon Plus for it: even fewer punctures but they are a bit heavy.

Sorry, despite owning an MTB for over 20 years, I still know nothing about tyres and will be following this thread with interest.

Road bike is used daily for a commute in summer and then for fun rides of 30-60 miles with the odd 100miler.

Thanks for the suggestions

I'm not sure I'd like to ride 100 miles on Marathons so I'd go (and I have on both the commuter and my distance bike) for Durano Plus

And then mtb is used daily for commute in winter and for fun rides year round of 15-70 miles. And I sometimes commute on it in summer also, in fact last year I barely used the road bike ;)

25mm conti gatorskins folding (make sure it's the folding model, not the wire bead). They're fast enough, rather puncture proof, and with your petite frame, you could lower the air pressure to improve ride quality.

BUT someone else recently pointed out in another thread that Conti 4 Seasons has the same puncture protection but faster rolling and better ride. I really don't knowbthe very latest specs but I reckon the gatorskins might have better side wall protection.

Thank-you really helpful suggestions so far, will be checking them all out later and comparing price etc.

Any recommendations for the mtb?

I used to use them all the time. Cheaper than a Durano but I found I spent more time fixing punctures. Not inordinately long just more. They are a long way from the worst tyre I've ever had (and I still have some on the single speed), probably third on my list behind the two Schwalbes.
I'm getting about 2 punctures on the rubinos, 1 genuine one from something that gets through the casing mid-life, and the second that tells me it's worn out and ready to replace.

Last time I fitted marathons (16" wheels) I got 3 punctures in a week. And it wasn't a problem with the tyres or wheels, just bad luck.

Agreed. The thing with tyres is it's all about perception and personal choice. A quick look through the threads on tyres on here and Marathons come out as being bomb proof or almost. I ran those for three years on the commuter but then towards the end of last year (on a fairly new tyre) I had 3 punctures in about 6 weeks. That amount of time standing next to the road put me back on to Duranos as they've been my distance tyre of choice for years. I got one puncture on LEL, I also had a bad puncture on a FNRttC but for the most part I don't have any issues.

Rubinos were the same. Hardly any punctures for years then I had about 4 in a couple of weeks on the Old Kent Road. That put me on Marathons.

There's a mention of 4 Seasons up above. I truly hate those. Can't stand them because I found that they just hold on to flints and if you don't clean them out after every ride they just work through and puncture.

If your using it mainly on road and hardpack track then you won't go far wrong with Schwalbe Big Apple. I've used them since 2008 and even though I've had to pull all manner of stuff out of the rubber, nothing had made it through to the inner tube. Also they do them in 2" and bigger so they don't look daft on an MTB, they extra volume adds to the comfort and they roll effortlessly.

I've now upped them to 2.35" but these are 2.0" on my old MTB
