Tyre question, can I fit narrower tyres to rim?

Hi

Despite having a really nice road bike I still find myself taking my 14 year old Raleigh hybrid out most weekends for a blast round the quiet country roads where we live, I just get on well with it!

It has 700c wheels and the stock tyres (which are still on it!) are 35c width.

I don't do any off road stuff or even cycle trails so I was wondering if I could fit narrower tyres with less rolling resistance to the existing rims? Do you think they could take say 700 x 28 c tyres?

Can't see any measurements on the rims, but the rubber beading inside seems to say 700 x 12??

Thanks in advance

Pretty sure that should be ok. I took 28C tyres off my hybrid and put 23C faster rolling tyres on and was pleased with the difference.

I find 28s about ideal on my Hybrid They're about the same as the old 1 1/8" we all ran on racers back in the 70's. Make sure to keep them on their Max Rated pressure (or close to it for a touch more comfort) I personally wouldn't go any thinner on a hybrid although another of my bikes has 20s on identical rims (Mavic open sport). Ride nice those old Raleighs don't they hence the username

Thanks for the replys, 28s it will be!

Struggling today, road bike is out of action with buckled wheel and aforementioned hybrid is in local bike shop having first service in 14 years!

No outstanding household chores, no taxi service for the kids, nice dry fresh weather and I can't get out

This seems like a good excuse to get a 3rd bike!!

Hi,

YMMV but the best tyres for it are likely to be 32mm city type tyres. I like these :
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/michelin-city-road-tyre/rp-prod26232
They come in 28mm and 32mm with puncture protection and reflex.
(ignore the very poor picture of the unreflexed tyre.)
I don't think the 28mm will roll any better than the 32mm, probably worse,
and doubt 28mm at higher pressures would suit the bike very well.

rgds, sreten.
