tyre pressures

I need advice

I am using 700/23 tyres to max pressure of 120 psi - on long runs ( 50 to 100 miles ) on not to smooth surfaces jarring sometimes causes undue fatigue

If I reduce the tyre pressures to say 100 psi I know it will create a smoother ride - but will I require more effort

some advice on this would be welcomed

I doubt you'd notice any difference. If the surface is bumpy, rock hard tyres bouncing around do little to improve rolling resistance and may even be dangerous. Experiment a little and see what works best for you. This is a controversial subject.

My tyres were supposed to be 50 psi but they were under 40. When I pumped them up my bike was alot easier to ride, especially up hill.

Depends on terrain. On silk smooth roads high pressure is best. When you have to contend with a rough surface a bit of give in the tyres is a good thing. 100psi is still very high and you may be able to run them lower still.

Check out the tons of threads we've had on the subject in the past but I doubt if you'd notice it I usually run 95-105 for comfort and will only pump my tyres up usually once a week and pressures may have fallen to circa 90psi (or lower) and I cant say I notice the difference between 105 and 90. Occasionally I pump my tyres up on my carbon fibre bike to 120psi (as its still a comfortable bike) and do the same leaving it for a few weeks (during which psi falls) and again I can't say I notice the difference. Also I think if you are more comfortable you can perform better. I think its a case of experimenting till you find is what is right for you.

Be wary of too little pressure since it could lead to the 'p' word
