another newbie question...

how long should a tyre last if you exclude punctures etc. I am thinking of normal wear, what sort of mileage should you expect from a half decent tyre - I guess you can't compare with a car tyre but are we looking at 100s of miles or 1000s?

Anything from about 500 on a rear tyre to a few thousand, depending on how light you go. The faster and stickier a tyre is the quicker it will wear.

Yup, agree with this. And my commute is over the glass/crap strewn roads of SE London.

My front currently has 4500 miles on it and still looks fine, although I had my first puncture on it a couple of weeks ago so I've started thinking about replacing it. My rear looks worse despite having done more like 2000 miles, but has no punctures so I'm not in a hurry to switch it.

Both tyres are 700x35. The front is a Bontrager that came with the bike, the rear is a Vittoria that only cost about £11 from Wiggle.

It depends on your weight and the terrain but mainly on the make of tyre. I get over 2000 miles on Michelin Pro's for the rear whilst a lightweight Veloflex tyre is between 300-500 miles for the rear.

Thanks for the replies, I am running with these http://www.rutlandcycling.com/13226/Specialized-Borough-Tyre.html 700x45 on a crosstrail comp. So far so good, they came as standard on the bike but happy to take any suggestions for a better tyre for when the time comes to replace them. I know very little about tyres apart from what I am picking up on this forum.

Asking how long tyres should last is a wee bit like asking how long is a piece of string... it depends on how you treat them. Often the tyres that come with a new bike are fairly cheap and will last less long that a good pair, replace them when you start getting p$nct$res...

WAY to many variables, absolutely hammering my road bike on sticky 700x20 tubulars the front will last about 4000 miles rear about 1500 if I'm lucky. On 700x28 Durano/Marathon plus about 3000 on the back & I'm starting to see wear, on the front they look barely scrubbed in.

Its all relative weight tire size etc. My Conti contact and they are just over 8000 miles old and haven't really had a problem but they are a pretty wide 37c, used on 99.99999999% road and I'm fairly light. My Road bike tires usually go at about 3500 miles; they are a relatively skinny 23c. HJ puts it well ' like asking how long is a piece of string'
