Tyre fit

Hi there

One of my friends is going to buy his first bike (well his first bike since a child) and he is looking at this one:

I've advised him to purchase Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres (I swear by them!) - is it possible to put them on this bike and, if so, what is the best size? Also, it says that that the wheels are 28inch - is this the same as 700c?

A true friend would not advise anyone to purchase Marathons, to be fair. Unless you secretly hate them. But yes, 28/700 = same.

Or you think the friend may be the type who will give up cycling rather than attempt to fix a puncture.

Not always (there are at least two 28 inch sizes and four 700s) but in that case, yes.

Edited to add: the least-ambiguous size given is 38-622, which is something like 28"x1⅝"x1⅜" and almost 700c (1mm wider I think). But use 38-622 as the base for tyre selection: 38 is the width and 622 is the diameter... you can vary the 38 up and down, probably by at least 10, but always stick with 622 on that wheel.

Why does he need new tyres without even riding the bike. I'd wait to see if they puncture

M+ are hateful hard things IMO. I'd rather fix the odd puncture!

Much as I love those tyres, they're more in the Schwalbe V-Guard puncture-resistance class below Marathon's Smartguard, and nowhere near Marathon Plus.
