After using my Giant SCR1 for all my winter riding it wasn't feeling as smooth as it used to. While reading a few threads on about cleaning chains etc, i decided to give my SCR a clean with white spirits. What a result! I was out yesterday and she is running nice and smooth again. Well pleased. Lesson 1 learn't, a little TLC goes a long way.

Lesson 2. Getting of the saddle while climbing hills does not mean the hill has beaten you. It's fun mixing it up, doing some hills seated and others not seated, working diferent muscles. Thanks to all who have posted comments about hills and how to climb them.

Looking forward to next week, for more cycling and CC forum threads.

white spirit on chains is a good way of getting it clean but remember to put some lube back on .

getting ones arse of the saddle does give some extra muscles some work to do and it braeks the norm a bit

Indeed. I use white spirit - just as good as those proper chain cleaners but it's 2 quid for half a litre, not a tenner for a minuscule amount.

I give it a run through a chain cleaner with white spirit, then with water, then white spirit again, then just water. Normally enough for the water to be clean but if not rinse and repeat as needed. Dry with a rag, give it 10 more minutes just to air dry then lube.

Diesel is apparently quite good as well but I've never used it.
