1) Stops the cartridge falling out if you brake when you 'move' the bike backwards (but won't stop the cartridge flying out if you install them the wrong way round )
2) It's supposed to make the wheel easier to refit in a hurry as it pushes/aligns the tyre so it slides past the brake block as you insert the wheel.

Don't go fitting blocks the wrong way round.

Those were the only two reasons I could think of but they didn't seem very convincing, hence the question.

You'd have to be going backwards at a fair speed to risk losing the inserts: it's not as if they're a particularly loose fit.

I can see wheel guides working before quick release brakes were usual and when the guides were more substantial, but they look too small to be of any use now.

But what do I know...

PS Fitting cartridges the wrong way is something you'll only do once (don't ask me how I know that).

The cartridges are marked with the direction of travel, so the inserts don't fly out when you jam the anchors on.

"A friend of mine" was in a hurry and fitted them back to front: tanking down a big hill he grabbed a handful of brake, there was a "pop" as the rubbers went South, followed by a "brown trouser moment" as "my friend" wore the soles of his shoes out bringing himself to a halt...

Other than that, all's well thanks: building up a time trial bike for the end of this month.

Saw you've been out on your tandem: pictures please.

I left the pins out of a new set of pads, stopped on a hill, applied the brakes to stop the bike rolling back. Except the grip of the blocks on the rim was greater than the grip of the blocks in their shoes. All four slipped out.

Didn't think of that: point taken.

Like I said: "what do I know"?
