I have a hazy recollection that Rolf played Glastonbury 1992/3. Stairway to heaven by Rolf after 10 pints of hot spicy cider and half bottle of scotch = Rolf as Hendrix.

The original version had a bit of pace and excitement.

The new version has been 'swingle - singered'. (For those who remember 'Sing Something Simple' on the wireless.) It's terrible!

I agree (and yes I recall the Swingle singers and that "Sing Something Simple came on after the Top-Twenty countdown of the "Hit Parade".

I think it's the originals simple stacatto swing simplicity which gave it the impact when the tone of the lyrics change and you realise the song has a deeper meaning.

There was a thread a while ago about what was the saddest/most emotive song and this IIRC caame out a clear favourite. I think it's a bloke thing.

I memorised the song as a kid...I still rate it as one of my favs of all time. Did anybody see the tv programme the other night about the two boys who fought in WW1...Rolf's Dad and uncle.

It's out and out tosh, but has personal meaning for Rolf, apparently (well, he wrote it)... in my more sentimental moments, it can "get to me" I s'pose, like when Mary went blind on Little House on the Prairie... blub, sniff ;)

He didn't. What he did do though was take the original song and slow it right down.

Last year, when out for a ride, I had a catastrophic chain failure and told my mate to go on and that I'd phone up Mrs rich p to come and rescue me. He started singing that song and towed me home (it was flat!). I can feel a tear welling up as I speak.....blub, blub, blub.......;)
