Two bikes into one. Impossible question?

Getting faster, very slowly
For some reason I´m under pressure at home to reduce my four bikes to three. Can´t think why!
Winter & summer road bikes are staying though.

I commute on a single speed and have a Trek hybrid for shopping and rides in park with kids.
I´d like to replace these two bikes with one that would do both jobs but not sure if such a bike exists? I don´t want a standard geared bike for the commute (maintenance, no hills) but I need some sort of gearing for the shopping because there are some short hills near me that I need to climb with full paniers.

So I´m thinking about hub gears.
I´ve heard the gears are fairly low range (29-91 inches) which sounds ideal?
I´m also trying to avoid a heavyweight bike because of the commute.
Mudguards and a rack on the bike are a must.

The only ready made bike that I can find that is anything like what I´m looking for is this Geneses Day One Alfine:

On the down side it´s heavy-ish (but would be lighter with different tyres) and my LBS say the disc brakes are not maintenance friendly. I like orange so that´s not a problem!
Does anyone know of any similar bikes or should I be thinking of a custom build?

If you're after a drop-barred hub-geared bike, then your choice off-the-shelf is going to be somewhat limited.

The only other ones which come to mind are the On-One Pompetamine Versa http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CBOOPOMPETVERSA/on-one-pompetamine-versa and the Pashley Clubman Urban http://www.pashley.co.uk/products/clubman-urban.html

You might find it better and cheaper simply to replace the rear wheel on your single-speed with a hub-geared one. SJSC have a good selection of hubs available and can build the wheel around it for you. Personally I use a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed with 90mm drum brake (XL-RD3) which is one of the heavier options, but having a drum brake means there's no rim wear and almost no maintenance.

Thanks for your reply. Doesn´t have to be drop-barred. My SS isn´t set up for paniers etc but would have been a neat solution. I´m trying to find out if Genesis sell the Day One frame separately.
Like both the bikes you linked to.
Plenty to think about.
Thanks again!
