I don't really understand Twitter, and I have tried, believe me  But a question - if someone follows someone else, do they get messages popping up on their phone all the time ?

Thats not a twitter issue thats an app notification issue. Same as with all apps you can turn it off.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I am on twitter but only so that I could see what all the hoo ha was about. Only made 1 or 2 posts then gave up as I don't really understand how it works.

I do have a Twitter and I like going on there, but I'm not worth following since I don't really post at all. I use Twitter mainly to see what's trending or if something is being said about something I'm interested in; Sometimes I find someone to follow who is really amusing so that aspect is nice. I'm very much a consumer rather than a contributor.

I'm also conscious of the fact employers can and do monitor for your opinions, my Twitter handle is close to my real name so in line with most of my other internet activity I try to avoid putting opinions out there that can be misunderstood or twisted. I'm not into getting involved in stupid and ultimately pointless arguments with strangers, which seems to be what a large number of people do on Twitter.

Twitter's very good for cycling stuff. It's also v. handy for one of my other interests, birding- finding out what's on my local patch pretty much as it happens.
We're coming into spring migration season so it's always good to catch up on early arrivals. Though don't whatever you do search for 'first swallow'.
I steer clear of politics and enjoy the funny stuff - there's plenty of that. One of my current favourites is @SlenderSherbert
@grumpyskeletor appeals to my rather unsophisticated sense of humour too. I'm @gloworm558 though an infrequent poster.

I started using Twitter with SMS (when it was still free for most major networks). Yup - a system bragging as "just 140 characters!" used to be entirely text-based, hard to believe I know.
I didn't have a smart-phone - this was 2006-7, not sure how deep smartphone market penetration was then?

I'd recommend Michael Hutchinson, QIkipedia and https://twitter.com/dog_rates as some lockdown lift accounts to dip into.
Or you can doom-scroll - your choice!
