I'm looking at buying a turbo trainer for use over the winter. Any ideas on what I should be looking for when buying one?

They are the work of the devil. If you can ride one of them through winter, you are a better man than me. Throw rain, snow and ice at me - I'd rather be out there.

I loves 'em, but then I am a screaming idiot. On a more serious note, they can be great for dealing with injuries and joint problems as the environment and effort can be controlled. Without my turbo, I would probably never have got back on the road.

About a year ago I got myself some rollers and tend to use these much more than the turbo now. Like everyone says, they are more interesting to ride than turbos and do wonders for your technique. Also, riding rollers is officially as cool as ****.

My Physio suggested an exercise bike to help with recovering from the broken femur and I toyed with the idea of bolting one of my bikes to a trainer but then good sense prevailed and I bought a Trike. For me cycling pointlessly has no attraction, my rides are always to get somewhere even if that's an 80 mile round trip to a pub in Derbyshire (cycle route 6 and the Tissington trail make that a great day out)
I'm pretty sure that 10 minutes on a trainer in the conservatory would bore me witless.

I only got my turbo a couple of months ago and that was for the winter but I have to say I have already used it far more than I had anticipated.
I'm still experimenting though. Tried listening to music, reading (although I find that hard to do while pedalling) and watching TV. Probably listening to music while mixing the resistant regularly gives me the best results in terms of exercise time, after all that is what I do it for, exercise the old body ;)

It's still early days but I do really like my CycleOps Jet Fluid Pro, the resistance adjusts itself according to how fast the back wheel is going.
Bought a cheap 10 inch tablet to enable me to watch tv in the garage while riding it.
I think you need to be very focused/dedicated or of a certain mindset(like me, I used to swim 5,000m 5 days a week no problem with being bored)
Not as enjoyable as being out on the road but sometimes time is short and a road ride is out of the question, so better than not riding at all and I think it is starting to help when I do actually ride outside.

When I have to use a turbo I don't listen to music or watch movies etc. but concentrate in maintaining the speed and power that I've chosen to follow. It is no supplement for actually riding a bike but it is a good alternative for when actually riding isn't possible for any reason.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a trainer. It's called "the road".

If it floats your boat then go for it, but aside from protecting an injury etc but I can't see what it offers that a bike ride can't. Indeed, the money could be used towards N+1.

it offers way of training when or if you can't get out on the roads in the wet, windy winter. Can also offer some very constructive training sessions in the off season for TT training

I understand and agree that a turbo is not a replacement for a good ride BUT there are timres when a turbo trainer offers a better anternative to me. I really don't like riding in the rain or in at night by myself. An hour on the trainer and I feel that I have done something and I feel better for it.

My wife was asking why I don't like riding in the rain when I love walking in the rain. A couple of weeks ago I went for a 50 miler and I got caught in the rain and I felt fine, no issues with me but I have to say I could not stop thinking what the water was doing to my bike. I think that plays an important part in me avoiding the rain whenever I can. I don't abuse my bikes.
Turbo trainers aren't for everybody. I accept and respect people that can't stand them.
