I was close to buying one for over the winter but after a bit of research had some doubts.............bearing in mind I have an exercise bike........so I want one purely to keep road-fit and keep my poor a***e in tune with the saddle (I cannot change the saddle on the exercise bike).
1) Do I have to remove the rear wheel spindle for every model trainer or is that just the ones I looked at ?
2) Tyre wear! If I use it say, once a week for = 30 miles, will it have a noticeable wear on the tyre ?

Most trainers come with their own QR, which is specific to the fitment. Wear on the tyre should be no worse than riding 30 miles on the roads. Some tyres hold up better than others though..

Thanks for that.
So.........why do I read all the comments about putting other tyres on for the trainer ?

I use the stock wheel that came with my bike as my turbo wheel . The stock tyre was fine for a while but it started to slip after a while making a horrible noise . . I think if i cleaned the tyre or took that wheel out on the road there wouldn't have been a problem but a turbo tyre was only £10 so i just put one on . Will probably still need to wipe it down now and then though .

Take a look at classified or eBay for your turbo trainer purchase. Most people get one and then stick it up for sale soon afterwards when they realise how boring/painful turbo riding is. You could get one from there, have it for a couple of months, and then resell it on the classifieds and not lose any money ;-)

I find it dull but there is no escaping it gives rewards .

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
You shouldn't have to change the wheel at all. And as for wear and tear. The wear is minimal. I just use wheels that came with the bike.

Mine's axle mounted (Elite turbo Muin) so you remove the rear wheel altogether, so there's no tyre wear Cyclops do one similar, 'the silencer' and I think there's a few others like that but most are freehub mounted via the QR lever and tread resistance in which case you'll need to swap it over for the first turbo ride, you don't really need to swap it back for road rides. I can't say about tyre wear because the last time I used a turbo of that type I had a turbo tyre.

I've just bought a Bkool trainer that has variable resistance for hills, a simulator program that links your trainer to pc. Look at www.bkool.com Its reasonably quiet and I've fitted a trainer tyre so I dont wreck my road tyres. I recommend it.

Likewise I got one in October. Impressive piece of kit when it eventually is up and running.
