Turbo trainer

Buy a better one second hand, there's usually always loads available as tons of people buy them but not many can hack the boredom and sell them on quickly IME.

That one will always be a cheapo one, whereas if you buy a better one second hand but don't like it you'll probably get your money back out of it when you sell it on.

[EDIT] rollers like sight-pin mentions below do offer a more engaging ride than a turbo, this is due to the concentration required so you don't end up in a heap on the floor, but they aren't for everyone.

I use the Elite Magnetic Trainer from Halfords, they had a sale on them some time back.
Works well with the road bike, but not good with the mtb though, as it needs slick tyres.

With 50/12 chaining selected on road bike, I find it hard going when the trainer is set to number 2 or 3, (quickly gets me breathless) The trainer can go up to number 5.
Not as good as normal riding though imo

I always fancied trying one of these ;)
