Ladies and Gents, a colleague of mine at work has got into cycling over past couple of years, along with his two teenage boys.

As the resident "cycling nut" in the office, I've been asked for Turbo Trainer recommendations in the £120 range. As I haven't bought one for c8 years, could you let me know your recommendations for the current range out there?

Many thanks.

I think as 'resident cycle-nut' you owe it to them to recommend upping their budget to the cheapest fluid based turbo they can find. The magnetic resistance ones are sucky...

+0.5 for the fluid trainers as they give a much better, more realistic and progressive resistance, but I'm not sure the price hike is justified unless your friend is a power monster. Also, a non-adjustable resistance turbo (ie no resistance control cables) is fine as long as the resistance is sufficient for his needs and he's riding a geared bike.

And the noise, don't forget the noise...
I struggle to make a noise from any form of turbo!

More seriously, I think the newer mag turbos have improved on the noise front. I've an old cyclops fluid pro, and it's no quieter than my friend's mag tacx.

Mag turbos are not noisy - I think you may be confusing them with fan-resistance units - which are noisy...
Fans are fairly niche these days I would have thought. Apart from the headwind thingy for Kreitler rollers (yum!) and some off-brand crap on amazon , I don't think I've even seen one for sale recently.
