after deciding my fitness is very poor I've decided I need to get more riding in. Unfortunately I don't get any time to ride during the week, I only get one day at the weekend for a ride. I was thinking of setting my turbo up in the garage to use maybe twice a week if time permits.

The only thing that worries me is I usually get home between 6-6:30pm then I have dinner around 7pm. I was thinking of resting and playing with my son for an hour to an hour and a half before he goes to bed. At which time it will be 8-8:30, this is the time I will be able to use the turbo. I was hoping to use the turbo for around 60 - 90 minutes depending on how I feel. After that I would then have a milkshake and relax in front of the TV for an hour or two before I go to bed. I don't have any goals I want to reach like hr, power etc I just want to keep my legs spinning which will hopefully pay off in my weekend ride.

The question I want to ask is does this seem like a good plan timing wise in regards to food and rest or is this just going to do more damage than good

There's no particular reason why you shouldn't do that. People jump on turbos at all kinds of weird times - 8.30 isn't a weird time though...

Yeah, I think you should be fine. I used to go the gym and lift weights til gone ten at night back in the day...
I was younger then though

Any time is good time!

When my little one was properly little, LocalLass wasn't well at all and I had a three hour commute, so I ended up running at 430/500 to get it in whilst they slept.

I am in the same boat as you with a little one.

I find after I have been on the turbo or to the gym that I stink so I need to go in the shower. Before I know it its 10-10:30 and time for bed.

Just make sure you make time for your partner and don't neglect simple things like washing up on your rest days to compensate.

I also make sure when I am training that it is a hard session and a real workout. I like to feel like I have gained something after an hour rather than going for a spin for 90 mins.

Nothing wrong with your plan..
I would add that might be a good idea to add a goal to keep you going...
Turbo is a different monster and might not be as easy as you think to keep going for an hour..
If it works for you just to pedal.... Great!!! but I suggest have a plan B and C. I find it easier to follow some sort of structure then just to spin.. Again is a suggestion only.
Good luck..!

Thanks for the feedback guys, unfortunately I can't commute to work as i work in a different place every day so the car is essential. I would love to have trainer road or something like that to ride along to but the only place I have for my trainer is a space in the garage with no power so will just be music or something on iplayer.

I'm just gonna get on the bike and have a spin and try that for a few days, see how I get on and might decide to set some goals in the future, at the moment my focus is just keeping my general fitness up so I can ride for longer on my weekend ride as I'm going to start riding with a group and don't want to be left behind.

I have a cat eye wireless computer, will it work the same if I was to put it on my back wheel to monitor speed and mileage?

If not is there anything I can get to link up to my garmin 200 that does the same thing?

You're not doing any mileage on a turbo, it doesn't go anywhere, you can measure the speed the wheels spin and the time spent

Trying telling your legs they haven't cycled anywhere. That's what counts!

My advice would be buy the best bib shorts you can afford and an economy size Vaseline tub. ^_^

Of course I won't be going anywhere but I would be if I wasn't on the turbo, the wheel still spins the same so there must be a rough mileage I can measure just as a guide
