Are tubular tyres particularly bad in the wet ?
Are they more susceptible to punctures than regular clinchers ?

Reason I ask, guy on the Ride 100 had four blowouts in 20 minutes. He had to retire.

Not particularly, but sometimes it just happens. Don't use tubs anymore, but when I did, I used to carry one or two spare tubs AND a razor blade, needle and some wax thread and would repair it at the road side.

I seem to remember mine were always getting punct*res. Who uses them? I certainly don't want by the roadside trying to emulate this lady.

No, the type of tyre and pressure used will be more important.

Tubulars have less chance of puncturing than clinchers as they don't tend to pinch flat. They also won't come off the rim if you get a blow out.

I assume the guy wasn't riding tubs though otherwise he would have had to replace 4 tubular tyres?? Most take one spare and/or a can of pitstop.

FWIW i have punctured 3 or 4 times max in the 22 months i have had tubs. I have punctured clinchers a whole lot more but they are far cheaper to replace and repair should they need it.

Tubulars for racing and/or good conditions rides and clinchers for everything else.

I much prefer the feel of tubs but don't like paying mega bucks for the them. I try to look out for good deals - like the £40 a pop Schwalbe 1's i just got. ^_^
Those are nice tyres and they usually go for £72 per.

He did replace 4 tubular tyres - he was with a large group of riders from Miami, I guess he nabbed a few from his mates - the Ride100 was supposed to be the highlight of his holiday

Jaysus! Imagine the cost of that only to then retire from the race! :B)

One has to assume there was something wrong with the wheel and in return caused each tyre to blow out. You would be more likely to be struck by lightning twice in one night than to puncture 4 separate tubs in one ride. Well, maybe.........

I was at the hub in Leatherhead when a tandem came up with a tub on the rear, punctured and rolled from the rim. The mechanic basically said, "hard luck the sweepers are over there".
